John is a Professor of Physics and Department Chair in the Department of Physics & Astronomy, as well as a member of the Maine Center for Research in STEM Education, at the University of Maine. He studies the learning and teaching of physics, in particular how college students use and think about mathematics in physics contexts and how they relate the math to the physics (and vice-versa).
John and his graduate students investigate student understanding of various physics topics, and use the findings of that research to develop instructional materials that aim to improve student learning of physics. He also works on the preparation and professional development of K-12 physics and physical science teachers. John spent the 2008-2009 academic year as a Fulbright Scholar at the TU Dublin (previously known as Dublin Institute of Technology) in Dublin, Ireland.
